Beauty & The Ballot

When I was in 10th grade, I ran for vice president of my class. I put on one helluva campaign. I worked tirelessly on substance and slogans, intentions and ideation, and communicated with my classmates about what they wanted in their VP, and what I could offer them.

I ran for VP because I knew my class wouldn’t vote for a girl for president. I knew this because I grew up in Dallas, Texas in the 1990s and attended a prep school, and, as forward-thinking as our school was, most of the higher-level student body officers were male.

When the debates rolled around, I felt majorly prepared. If I had one gift, I knew it was talking and communicating with people, and expressing my ideas in an exciting way...even to 16-year-olds, who made it a policy to never look too excited. At that young age, I had a feeling that my gift of gab would be my saving grace both in this campaign and in my life.

This was my moment to shine. Up before me went my top contender, a friend of mine whom I genuinely liked and related to. He spoke of all of the attributes that would make him a great leader, and I agreed with him wholeheartedly. He was my staunchest competition. After a solid speech, he told the crowd of bored sophomores, “So, you can vote for me…or you can vote for a wannabe fashion model.” Continue Reading
